COMMITTEE UPDATE - August 2002
by Don Stokes

One of the exciting results of the Hancock Town Forum was hearing from citizens about their most important concerns. One of the three main concerns that surfaced was the preservation of the rural and natural character of the town and this resulted in the formation of the Town Forum Open Space Committee.

This committee is actively trying to pull together an inventory of Hancock's most important physical resources, including: streams and lakes, aquifers, wetlands, important wildlife habitat, connections and buffers between and around wildlife areas, trails and class VI roads, important beautiful views within the town, recreation areas, and historic and cultural landmarks. An inventory of these resources is a first step in preserving the special qualities of this town that we all love so much.

The committee of about 20 members, and growing with each meeting, is working under the superb guidance of the Hancock Conservation Commission, which is helping with its experience and support. Several members of the Conservation Commission are on this committee.

In an effort to draw all of the town into this process, the Town Forum Open Space Committee will be sending out a questionnaire to all residents asking for their input on important beautiful views in town, what they feel are the most important rural qualities of the town, and also on wildlife sightings they have had within town.

Our next meeting is on August 19, 7 p.m. in the Daniels Room. At this meeting we will have a chance to talk with Vicki Smith from the town of Hanover, NH. She was a key person in the development of their open space plan and will be able to help us in our next steps on the inventory. All are welcome.
