WAR MEMORIAL FUND GOAL ACHIEVED

The Hancock War Memorial Committee has announced the successful conclusion of the drive to raise monies to place a monument on the Common by Pine Ridge Cemetery and Old Dublin Road.

A boulder has been moved to the site and will be positioned in such a way as to best display a bronze plaque with the appropriate veterans' names.

Over the winter, the Committee will continue to search for names of men and women from Hancock who served in the Armed Forces during:

  • World War II - Sept. 8, 1939 to Dec. 31, 1946
  • Korea - Jun. 20, 1950 to Jul. 27, 1954
  • Vietnam - Jul. 8, 1959 to Jan. 20, 1973

Our sincerest thanks go to all who sent in contributions. We also want to thank Scott Burnside who donated his time and equipment to lift and move the boulder (estimated to weigh 5-6 tons).

The Committee hopes that this monument and its surrounding area will become not only a tribute to those who served, but a place which will enhance the Common and contribute to the charm and beauty of our town.

The memorial will be located in the area between Old Dublin Road and Pine Ridge Cemetery. (There is now a fund raising sign in the approximate location across from the post office). SEEKING HANCOCK VETERANS' NAMES
FOR INCLUSION ON A NEW WAR MEMORIAL

The fund drive for the Memorial to honor Veterans of WWII, Korea, and Vietnam opened on Old Home Day. All donations are tax-deductible and will be greatly appreciated by our Veterans and families.

by The Memorial Committee

At the March 2002 Town Meting, it was voted to authorize the placement of a permanent memorial on the Town Common to honor residents of Hancock who served in World War II, Korea, or Vietnam. A committee of Jarvis Coffin, Common Commissioner, Howard Weston, and Ray Pierce is working to carry out this project.

We are now in the process of gathering the names of all those who were residents of Hancock and in the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, or the Coast Guard at the time the conflicts started or entered one of the services during the time of the any of the three conflicts. The time frames for those conflicts is listed below:

• World War II
• Korea
• Vietnam

September 8, 1939 through December 31, 1946
June 20, 1950 through July 27, 1954
July 8, 1959 through January 20, 1973

The only apparent source of eligible names is the Memorial Board in the Town Office entryway. We are using that as the basis for information. If in doubt, please check that board. If someone you know is not on the board and is felt to be eligible, please contact one of the committee members, whose phone numbers are listed below. At some future date the completed list of names will be published for a final review by anyone interested.
