The trash compactor is the single largest expense within our Transfer Station budget. One of the ways to minimize this cost is to be sure that only Hancock residents are using our facility. We began issuing yearly dump stickers about 18 months ago and by now everyone has received the current dump sticker. In order to ensure that only residents are using our facility the Dump Committee will begin random checks to make sure that everyone using the facility has a properly displayed Town of Hancock dump sticker.
How can you tell if you are displaying the current sticker? We have made that easy for you and the attendants. The color of the dump sticker should match the color of your inspection sticker. If the colors don’t match then either you have an old sticker or your vehicle is un-inspected.
The recycling ordinance states that dump stickers will be displayed in the lower left corner of the windshield of any vehicle using the Transfer Station/Recycling Center. Any other location is unacceptable and needs to be corrected.
Why are we going through all of this explanation? Well on January 1, 2010 the Dump Committee will begin enforcing the sticker regulations. If a vehicle is found without a valid dump sticker the vehicle will be turned around.
So, what can you do if you do not have a current sticker? Please stop by the Town Clerk’s office and pick up a replacement sticker. You will need to show your current vehicle registration and fill out a simple form so that we can track the number of replacement stickers that are issued.
Please remember that even if you have been in town for 20 or more years, the attendants or the Dump Committee members do not know everyone in town. This is one of the easiest ways to help ensure that the dollars we spend are spent wisely and for the purpose that they are intended.
