Hancock Recreation Committee

Minutes from 5/16/2012 Meeting

In attendance: Jeff Wilder, Cindy Hixson, Roberta LaPlante, Kary Shumway

Jeff called the meeting to order at 6:30pm.

Minutes from the previous meeting were reviewed and approved.

Roberta presented a recap of the applicants for the Summer Recreation program counselor positions.  Candidates have been interviewed by Roberta and Dan Harper.  There was a review and discussion of candidates who applied for the position.  Roberta will be contacting candidates shortly to set the staffing for the program.  Cindy Hixson will run the program and be assisted by three counselors.

The Summer Recreation program will begin on June 25th and continue through August 17th.  The budget for the program, as approved at town meeting is $5,500.  Discussion was made regarding the fee structure for the program.  It was decided that cost for the 8week program would be $125 per child for Hancock residents, and $100 per additional child if a family has more than one child attending.  The cost for non-residents will be $150 per child.

The committee discussed the need for preparing the field and grounds at HES in advance of the Summer Recreation program beginning:  Need to treat the poison ivy, and put up snow fencing at the field.  It would be very helpful to also have a mowing and trash removal schedule.

The HES field day at Norway pond is scheduled for June 8th.  Jeff will round up volunteers to help put the docks into the water prior to this date.

Kary discussed an idea to put playground equipment at Moosebrook field – perhaps in the dirt area near the baseball field.  This was an idea put forth by several Hancock residents, looking for a place where children could play while older siblings are playing baseball or soccer.  The committee approved of the idea, and next steps would be to put together a more formal proposal and present to the selectboard.

The Hancock rec committee will sponsor a co-ed softball league for the town.  Kary will create a sign up form, and circulate to see how much interest there is among Hancock residents for games.

There being no additional business, the meeting was adjourned at 7:40pm.
