Hancock Norway Pond Committee

Meeting Minutes of 5/19/2010:

Committee met at Norway Pond Parking lot.

Those in attendance:

Kurt Grassett

Charlie Kerwin

John Jordan (selectboard)

Jeffrey Wilder (chair)

Jeff called the meeting to order at 9:30.

Purpose of meeting was for the committee to review the work that was done last fall.

1. Discussed email sent to committee from Tom Faber who said he would donate and plant 4-5 Bayberry and Beach Plume shrubs on the hillside to help discourage foot traffic.

Charlie stated that these shrubs very sharp and thorny and would spread over the hillside making it almost impossible to get through. They would also require trimming, as they would grow up to 6-8ft. tall.

It was agreed that it is not our intention to make it impossible for people to stand or sit on the hillside, just deter them from using it as pond access instead of the new walkway.

2. Reviewed location of new information Kiosk. Looking over a couple of different options it was decided to leave the Kiosk in it's current location.

3. Beach grooming. All were in agreement that the beach grade and material looked great.

4. New access path: Jeff requested that more material be added to have the path make a more gradual transition onto the beach. Kurt said this would be no problem. Also extend the "hardpack" material to in front of the information Kiosk.

5. Fencing: To deter foot traffic directly from the parking lot down over the hillside it was agreed to install more split rail fence just to the "pond side" of the walkway, following the walkway to the parking lot then extending east to the end of the parking spaces. Low bush junipers would then be planted in a row along the pond side of the fence to further discourage access to the pond via the hillside.

6. Discussed email suggesting additional landscaping by committee member Tom Pisaturo (who was unable to attend). Tom had suggested additional landscaping to make it look less "desolate" and something to further delineate parking adjacent to the Post Office. Possibly installing railroad ties. Kurt explained that there was a tree that was being planted in the area as part of the Main Street project. It was felt that railroad ties could be added if there became a problem with cars pulling too far forward toward the post office when parking.

7.Kurt said he would follow up on these items within the next week or two prior to the beach opening on the 26th of June.

There being no more business the meeting was adjourned at 10:10.

Respectfully submitted,

Jeffrey Wilder
