Hancock Recreation Committee minutes April 7, 2010

In attendance:

Charlie Kerwin, Kary Shumway, Jeff Wilder, Roberta LaPlante (selectboard),

Guest: Cindy Hixson

Jeff called the meeting to order at 7:08 pm.

Minutes of previous minutes were approved as written.

Discussion regarding hire of new waterfront director:

Jeff and Roberta had met with and interviewed Katie Cousins for the waterfront director position. Both overwhelmingly recommended her for the position.

She then met with the select board who also recommended her hire.

Committee reviewed her resume' and voted unanimously to accept her for the position.

Jeff will contact Katie and have her contact Barbara Caverly to fill out required paperwork etc.

Lifeguard positions:

Committee discussed hiring of lifeguards for the summer. It was decided that the new waterfront director should conduct interviews with the applicants but should go over her recommendations with the committee at next meeting.

Beach equipment needs:

Charlie reported that the rope floats needed to be replaced. Money was budgeted for this and Jeff will purchase.

Lifeguard chairs or other equipment needs were discussed. This will be taken up with the new director at the next meeting.

Geese:

Jeff has been firing "anti-goose artillery" at the geese with a small amount of success. He has recommended to Kurt to install a low string or barrier a few inches off the ground to keep the Geese from being allowed onto the grassy hillside.

Moosebrook Park:

Jeff reported that 3 spring travel teams will be playing at Moosebrook.

Fees will be as in past years, $20.00 per hr. through high school age players.

(Conval District). There are at least 3 Summer League teams that will register through Peterborough Rec. that will be using the field. Fees will be the same through high school age. Teams with teams predominately older than high school age, will pay fee of $30.00 per hr.

Baseball:

Kary reported that the baseball signups had been well attended with 40 kids signing up. Unfortunately the 11 and 12 year old turnout was poor with only 2 kids. They will join the Dublin team.

They have scheduled field maintenance day this coming Saturday.

The season is starting on May 1st.

Kary would like to find out who is responsible for the upkeep to the bleachers at the elementary school. Jeff reported that the bleachers were repaired last year by the Conval maintenance staff. He did not know if that was a "one time" thing or weather they were ultimately responsible to make sure the bleachers were maintained.

Jeff will check on this with the conval facilities manager.

Equipment:

Jeff is ordering new latches for the tennis courts. Both gate latches are broken.

Jeff has new nets for the full size soccer goals at Moose Brook. The current goals are original. Will need to budget for new goals approx. every 4 years. Nets cost approx. $200.00 each.

Summer Rec. Program:

All were in agreement that the Rec. program directors position should be a salaried position vs. an hourly paid position. Jeff will add up total hours and add additional hours for set up of program and come up with a salary figure.

Brady Blanchette and Olivia Wilder both intend to return to their positions.

Peter LaPlante does not plan on returning.

Jeff will put a "help wanted" ad in Hancock Happenings to try and fill the position.

It was agreed that as with the lifeguard positions the rec. director should bring her recommendation back to the board for final hiring decision.

Tennis:

The committee would like to have a member look into formulating a plan for rec. dept. sponsored tennis lessons.

Discussion will continue in future meetings.

Funds to Antrim Rec:

Jeff had been contacted by Celeste Lunetta of the Antrim Rec. Dept. regarding non-payment of 2 Hancock families participating in the fall soccer program.

The committee agreed to pay these fees to Antrim Rec. from the recreation fund.

Discussion followed regarding the creation of a scholarship fund to help with these situations in the future.

New member:

Cindy Hixson stated that she would like to join the committee. She was advised that new members need to write a letter to the select board stating their desire to join. The committed would then finalize this at the next meeting.

Being no further business the meeting adjourned at 8:20

Respectfully submitted:

Jeffrey Wilder
