Meeting Minutes

Wednesday January 13th 2010

In Attendence:

Jeffrey Wilder

Charlie Kerwin

Kary Shumway

Lisa Hunt (director, summer rec. program)

Roberta LaPlante (selectboard)

Jeff called the meeting to order at 6:35 pm

New Member:

Roberta introduced Kary Shumway to the group as our new member.

Summer Rec. Program:

Jeff asked Lisa for a summary of the 2009 summer rec. program.

Lisa reported that the enrollment was 50 – 51 children with an average daily attendance of 33-35. She felt that most feedback from both parents and children was positive. She would like to continue her position for the summer of '10.

It was agreed that Lisa would be in charge of hiring staff for this summer.

Norway Pond:

It was agreed that more involvement and more of a presence by the waterfront director was needed. Nancy Gladding's involvement and hours at the beach have been getting smaller over each of the last few years. It was agreed that there needed to be more options for swimming lessons and that lifeguards needed more supervision. This expanded position should also include the waterfront director taking one of the lifeguard positions for the majority of the week.

Lifeguard job description was also discussed and all felt that the lifeguard's job description should include beach maintenance, raking etc. and that the lifeguards need to improve communication with rec. dept. staff.

Jeff will contact Nancy as to her intentions. All felt that Nancy should be given the opportunity to continue if she is willing to take on a more active role.

Beach Equipment:

Charlie reported that the docks were in generally good condition. The bead lines need to be replaced.

Winter Activities:

There was discussion about trying to expand winter activities.

Snowshoe hikes on town's conservation land trails and bringing back the winter frolic were a couple of the ideas discussed. There will be future discussion on this.

Walking trails expansion:

Jeff discussed the desire to connect the Moosebrook rec area to the Depot St./ Prospect Hill land trail system. This would require a bridge to cross the outlet of Norway Pond.

Jeff will investigate possibilities.

There was discussion as to possible grant money for this project.

Budget:

Jeff gave a brief review of the 2010 rec. budget to the committee.

Baseball:

As Kary is involved with the town's Cal Ripken baseball program he agreed to try to get the baseball program and the rec. committee together to discuss needs both current and future.

As there was no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 7:40 pm

Respectfully submitted:

Jeffrey Wilder
