SPECIAL NOTICES
Publisher's Clearing House Phone Scam

The Hancock Police have received a report of a new phone scam. The scammer calls and acts as a representative of Publisher's Clearing House, claiming that a delivery team will arrive at the recipient's house at a given time with a check for the total amount of prize money won. The caller also requests that the winner purchase a Green Dot Money Card and pre-load it with a determined amount for processing. The caller calls back shortly before 'delivery time' and asks for the 'delivery number' on the back of the Green Dot card, which gives them access to the funds charged to the card.

Please be aware that these scammers sound legitimate. They sound like they are coordinating with the 'delivery team' during the course of a phone call, and will have used the name of a nearby business as their staging point.

Again, please be aware of these calls and do not provide them with any personal or financial information!

Medical Alert Systems Phone Scam

A telephone scam involving a promise of a free medical alert system as well as $3,000 for groceries has been reported by a town resident. The call is a recording and states that ‘you were referred by your doctor or primary care physician’. It also requests that you dial 1 to confirm a shipping address or dial 5 to notify your medical provider that you have opted out. The best course of action is to simply hang up and disregard the message. This scam is designed to appear legitimate in order for the scammers to access bank account information. If you receive these phone calls, please notify the Police Department at 525.4102.

School Safety

As some of you may have already noticed, the Hancock Police Department has stepped up its efforts to ensure that the Elementary School remains a safe and friendly place for all the children, faculty, and staff. Directed patrols when the students arrive and leave, frequent stop-ins, and a heavy presence in the area are only a few of the things that have taken place lately.

With that being said, our hearts and prayers remain with the families, innocent victims, and the entire Newtown, Connecticut community in this terribly difficult and tragic time.
