A 2011 Change in Ownership

Edwin and Nancy Adams, Owners

Edwin and Nancy Adams bought the store
on March 11, 2011. After two months of renovations to the structure and installation of a new apartment on the second floor, they made the announcement at town meeting that the building would actually be re-opened as a Market.

The Adams family has been in town for five generations.

Asked to provide a few thoughts on her family and the market purchase, Nancy said:

We raised our three children in town and continue to live here in the family homestead that we bought shortly after Everett Adams retired as the longtime Hancock Road Agent.

I think it is important that those generations to come have a meeting place at the local market. We will buy everything we can locally and already offer local breads, honey, syrup and prepared foods.

We now offer fresh fish on Fridays. Another one of our missions to ensure we remain a viable business model for years to come will be a class 'A' meat case.

With my 37 years in finance and management I can't think of a better fit for me and my husband. We will take things one day at a time as we learn the products and inventory levels, so please be patient and let me know what YOU would like in the store. We didn't have the benefit of working with previous owners but must say that Mike, Leslie and Neil Cass have all been very helpful as to what made the store a success for 25 years.

The next generation of our four grandchildren, Savanna, Ryan, Grace and Emma are so fortunate to have the town beach, store, church, schools, library, The Hancock Inn and Fiddleheads Café in this little corner of the State.

A bit of Hancock Market trivia*
  • Built by C.W. Farmer in 1878, "housed the post office after Mr. Farmer was appointed postmaster in 1886."

  • "On October 3, 1896, Farmer sold the store to William D. Fogg**, under whose ownership the store had considerable growth."

  • "The store had the first telephone in town [1904]; a switchboard was installed in 1918."

  • "It was also the first building in town to be illuminated by electricity.

  • "A walk-in refrigerator was the last modern convenience put in by Fogg" who sold the building to Daniel O. Devens in 1926.

**Bob Fogg's grandfather

  • "The first telephone service in Hancock was a pay station in W.D. Fogg's Store installed September 1, 1904, and connected directly to Peterborough."

  • The lines were connected to a small box-like board which was operated in the store from 7:00 A.M. to 6:00 P.M. After six o'clock it was moved to the residence of Mr. and Mrs. William Hayward (the present Thomas B. Manning, Sr. house [across the driveway]) for all-night service. Hancock was one of the very few small towns in New Hampshire with 24 hour service at this time."
