Daniels Room

Present:
Deb Sampson, Amy Marcus, Jim Musarra, Tom Pisaturo, Kim Cunningham, Tricia Froling, Shannon Hurley, Jan Caskey, Shirley Kane, Betsy Salazar, Marcia Pettee, Ray Pierce, Mary Garland, Dot Grim, Katrina Hall, Alison Rossiter, Dick Gilbert, Ann Moller, Barbara Strawbridge.

Deb Sampson acted as President for this meeting. The meeting was called to order at 7pm.

Minutes:
Minutes of August 4 accepted as written.

Treasurer's Report:
Jim reported that our balance as of August 4 was $5890.18, and our credits since then total $2116.35. The book sale generated $1931.17. $145 is from new memberships, which are still rolling in. Our membership is at 305 so far, which is close to what we had last year; in a community of 1700 this is a really good percentage. Our debits since the last meeting total $537.09, to bring our current balance to $7469.44. So the Friends organization is in good shape, although we've spent quite a bit already this year.

Kim Brady sent out letters to 6 members who gave $50 last year and received one response. It was suggested at the August 4 meeting that "thank-you's" be given to N ahida Sh erman and Roberta Beeson for their work on behalf of the library. Tom moved and the members o.k.'d the purchase of two $25 Toadstool Bookstore gift certificates; Kim B. and Deb will take care of this.

Library Director's Report:
Amy thanked the friends for all they've done in the past year. A wide range of new videos, audio tapes, DVD's and CD's have been purchased.

Jill Kuchinos will run the children's book club again, starting in January. Bobbie Nylander, the new Children's Librarian, will help. Preschool arts and crafts has started again on Wednesday afternoons, with 6-10 kids participating. The Friends purchased craft supplies for this program.

Election of Officers: At the Friends of the Library meeting on August 4, 2004, all the current officers indicated that they were willing to serve again; consequently there was no need to form a Nominating Committee. The four Board Officers were therefore proposed and unanimously elected. They are as follows: Kim Brady, President; Deb Sampson, Vice President; Jim Musarra, Treasurer; Kim Cunningham, Secretary.

Program Committees:

Art Exhibit:
Ray Pierce reported for Helen that the shows are going well. Artists love showing in the Daniels Room and she's now scheduling into 2008. No commission is taken, although an artist did donate a generous amount after a sale in the last show (students of the Pulidos.)

Baby Book:
Amy checked with Trish Harper-Lenticcio, who reprted that they made 12 deliveries in the past year. "It was a baby boomlet year in Hancock...a tough winter!" They are down to 3 books so will need more.

Handypersons:
Amy reported that George Salazar made a new sign with a special wooden hook for the videos and audios.

Ray pointed out that whoever makes the Children's Room cabinets should match what is there. Dick suggested contacting Sterling Abrams of Dublin for an estimate. he's done good work for All Saints Church in Peterborough.

Ray also reported on research he has done on producing magnets with the hours of the Town Offices, Library and Recycling Center. We can make them for 77 cents each for a quantity of 105. Sim's Press charges a fixed fee of $22 for set-up, and will print them. They can be laminated at Copies and More, then taped on the back with magnetic tape. We could have a "taping party." The Friends commended Ray for his "Yankee Ingenuity" and appropriated up to $100 for them.

Hospitality:
Barbara Strawbridge thanked everyone who filled in for her when she was away this summer. Roberta can no longer participate due to her young children, so Barbara needs a helper. Katrina volunteered to do it. There is a new exhibit about every six weeks; some artists have an opening reception and some don't. The three artists participating in the current show had a small but lively opening last week.

In Home Services:
A notice about the services did not go into the October Hancock Happenings, so it should appear in November.

Speaker/Film:
Amy is enthusiastic about the new Film Series Committee, consisting of Mary Garland, Marsha Pettee, Tom Pisaturo and Katrina Hall. Films continue to be shown at 7pm on 3rd Fridays and a schedule will be in the Happenings in October. The current theme is dance; the film for  September was "West Side Story" and for October is "The Rocky Horror Picture Show."

"It Had To Be Done So I Did It" was presented on September 23. Rob Hanning's baseball program, co-sponsored by the Historical Society, will be on October 2. On November 5 the Library and the Harris Center are showing "Winged Migration" with Don Stokes introducing it. On November 10 the Library will co-sponsor an Open Spaces lecture. Alison, Ray and Dick volunteered to contribute refreshments.

Old Business:

Book Sale:
Thanks were given to Tom for charing the sale, to Dot Grim for the use of her barn, and to all the other volunteers. Tom stressed that the volunteers were really appreciated. The
sale was a success. This year a book dealer came and took 21 books to list on the internet, and we will probably realize $2-300 on this. So when it's all over revenue should be $2000 plus, more than last year. Tom thinks this is about the maximum for a town this size. Leftover books used to be a problem, but Deb and Ginger found someone to take them this year.

Tom mentioned that it's starting to get very hectic, especially on Friday night. We should probably think about how to control it for next year. Tom suggested that maybe the children's books should have their own sale, perhaps with toys, clothes and crafters. A special kid's event would lessen the strain on the Daniels Room.

Community Supper:
The Friends had discussed sponsoring or participating in a community supper but there was a distinct lack of interest. The Women's Club will sponsor one in the spring and want to know if we will do simple desserts. Mary, Katrina, Alison, Marsha, Shannon and Kim C. volunteered.

Museum Pass Renewals:
The Museum of NH History pass was only used once last year, by Tom, so the Friends decided not to renew. The Museum of Fine Art pass is $150 and is used. The Montshire Museum book of passes costs $65 and is used a lot. The Currier Museum is $50, and the Mariposa Museum comped us passes. The Peabody Essex, DeCordova and Norman Rockwell museums were suggested, but we need information on them. We had a pass to the Gardiner Museum and it wasn't used much. Marsha suggested the Worcester Museum and will get information about the cost.

We have $400 in the budget for passes and the MFA and Montshire alone total $215, so we need to think carefully about the other passes.

Library Trustees:
Ann Moller, on behalf of the Library Trustees, graciously thanked the Friends of the Library for their work during the past year.

Next Meeting:
The next meeting will be held on Tuesday, November 16 at 7pm in the Library Reference Room.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:05pm.

Respectfully submitted,

Kim Cunningham
