Monday, April 19, 2004
Library Reference Room
Present:
Amy Marcus, Kim Brady, Dot Grim, Tom Pisaturo, Jim Musarra, Dick
Gilbert, Helen & Ray Pierce, Betsy Salazar and Kim
Cunningham.
Minutes: Minutes
of February 9 accepted as written.
Treasurer's Report:
Jim Musarra reported that we now have a balance of $4190.41.
Library Director's Report: Amy is continuing to buy audio-visual supplies,
mostly DVD's and books on CD, and has submitted the bills to Jim.
Amy thinks that the Library needs a second public computer. Computer
time is reserved more and more by both adults and school children; 89
people used the computer in March. A top of the line Dell costs
between $700 and $800 and could be hooked up to the Internet via the
modem in Amy's office. Roberta Beeson has offered to help purchase
and install the computer. We already have a printer but it isn't used
much. Tom, who uses the Library computer, agreed that we need another
one. He wondered if the Library could have broadband access, but Amy
said that Adelphia would charge $40 to $50 a month and that our
Internet access currently is free.
Other big expenses coming up are $700 for the outside lights, more AV
materials, and contributing to the new rug in the Daniels room. Linda
Claff also requested a small vacuum for crafts time in the Children's
Room. It was unanimously voted to allocate $800 towards the computer
and up to $300 for a computer desk and the vacuum.
There was some discussion about preparing a budget for the FOL. We
have had one in the past and it is a good guide for spending. One
thing to factor in is that Pat Newcomb will be unable to organize the
Craft Fair again.
Program Committee Reports:
Art Exhibit: Helen
Pierce reported that Victoria Elbroch will display her etchings next,
then Robert Fay will have a photography show, and then the Pulidos
will exhibit from Aug. 1 to Mid- September. The exhibit schedule is
booked into 2007!
Baby Book:
Nothing new, books are being delivered.
Handypersons:
Ray reported that George Salazar continues to do a lot of maintenance
jobs. The doors in the Daniels Room need to be planed. Also, the book
drop door is hard to open; can the box be raised or the tar ground
down?
In Home Services: Nothing
new lately. Another announcement in the Fall Hancock Happenings might
be a good idea.
Speaker/Film: Amy
reported that the film series is going very well. 12-15 people
usually attend and 20 people came to "Eat Drink Man Woman." The last
film in the "foodee" series will be in May and will probably be "Who
is Killing the Great Chefs of Europe?" It was suggested that the film
program continue through the summer, maybe at 8:00pm; we could try it
for one month and see how it goes. The license to show films is $200
a year, which is less expensive than some museum memberships that
aren't used as much. The program should definitely continue next
year; Tom, Margot and Katrina are possibilities for a Film Committee.
Jill Kuchinos has 25 children in her book club and will show them a
film at the last meeting. The Friends voted to appropriate $25 for
popcorn for future films.
A possibility for a speaker is Rob Hannings, who does a presentation
on small town baseball. It could be co-sponsored by the Friends and
the Historical Society in the fall around World Series time.
Linda Claff is starting a children's program called "Hancock Reads
All Year" which will meet 4 times a year. There is less and less
participation in the Summer Reading Program. The Friends may want to
be involved in this new project. The first meeting will feature the
DenehyÄôs presenting The Lorax .
Old Business:
Membership Letter:
Kim Brady said that 1000 letters are printed and she has the
self-sealing envelopes and labels. We can use the Town postage permit
and purchase 10-cent stamps. There will be a mailing bee at the
Library on Friday, April 23 at 9:00am.
Board Vacancy:
Barbara Strawbridge has agreed to be a Member at Large. Kim B. raised
the point that perhaps all attendees should have a vote, not just M
at L's. The system was set up to create consistency in who attends
meeting and votes on financial matters. There can be as many M at L's
as there are interested people - it's not meant to be exclusive. If
we want general voting we have to change the by-laws. In the
meantime, Helen and Ray Pierce will also become Members at Large.
New Business:
Fund Raising:
The Library used to sell magnets for $1.50.
We could get 1000 made up for somewhere around $231 (Ray
Pierce is looking into the exact price) and sell them for perhaps for
$2 each. These magnets would include library and recycling center
hours. If sold, these could generate a substantial profit and perhaps
could replace the Craft Fair. We'll vote on it at the next
meeting.
Book Group:
Tom reported that the Book Group year is ending soon. We gave the
leader, Ken Sheldon, a gift certificate to the Toadstool last year,
it was agreed to give him a book this year. Amy will talk to his
wife, Chris, about an appropriate book, for which we allocated up to
$50.
Craft Fair:
What could we do as a fundraiser in lieu of the Craft Fair? We
usually make a lot of money on the bake sale. Could we piggyback a
bake sale on to another event such as the Book Sale? We will discuss
this further.
Next Meeting:
The next meeting will be on June 2, 2004 at 7:00pm in the Library
Reference Room.
Meeting adjourned at 8:30pm.
Respectfully submitted,
Kim Cunningham
