October 2005 floods
Borrowed from www.richlefko.com
Over 5 times the normal rainfall
bestowed us during the month of October. 2005 rainfall will break any existing records
that NOAA has kept. The rains of October did not hit Hancock as hard us other
towns West of us, but we managed to receive substantial damage in several
locations. The links below will bring you to each specific location and show
pictures of the damage as well as the dollar cost of the damage. Fortunately
for us the Federal Emergency Management Administration declared Hillsborough County a disaster
area that made us eligible for disaster assistance to help defray the cost. Below
is the 6 hardest hit areas.
Depot Road
Verney Road
Old Dublin
Road
Jaquith Road
Willard
Pond Road
Cavender
Road
Along with these 6 major areas we also experienced minor problems on Longview Road, Eaton Road, Old Town Road, and Weston Road. All together we had over $66,000.00 of
damage from these two events (not including the replacing of Cavender Road Bridge). We have made all roads passable, but
still have some work to finish during the summer of 2006. The flooding of 2005
will not be forgotten, and neither will the help and assistance that we received
from so many people. Without the help form other agencies, both Town and State,
and the support of the local contractors and citizens the repairs would have
taken much longer, and much more costly. Let’s hope that 2006 is sunnier and
drier for everyone.
